Not gonna find a bunch of reviews on 5 star restaurants, but hopefully a few good food finds at a good value!HellaBasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06982873353962642595noreply@blogger.comBlogger37125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5746592508377136668.post-72112323054280639522013-03-26T12:02:00.000-05:002013-03-26T12:02:15.816-05:00Queasrito: Good Eats or Urban Myth?As a lover or Chipotle and a guy that likes to slum it down to Taco Bell a fair share as well, I thought this video was pretty entertaining. How can you go wrong with wrapping a burrito in a quesadilla?

So any of you had a Quesarito from Chipotle? Worth the weird stares and extra calories?HellaBasshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06982873353962642595noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5746592508377136668.post-71240570942162779572013-03-06T14:11:00.001-06:002013-03-06T14:11:08.212-06:00Sneak Preview - Doritos Locos Cool Ranch TacoSo I heard on the radio early today, that even though the advertised date of the new Cool Ranch flavor Doritos Locos taco from Taco Bell was tomorrow March 7th, they would actually be available today. You may remember, I was quick to try the original Doritos Loco as well.

I could not resist the temptation, so I headed out at lunch to grab me one to try. Funny enough, I just made a run for the border yesterday and actually had a Nacho Cheese Loco with my meal. So with that fresh in my mind, I could make a decent comparison.

There were no signs and nothing on the menu, but if you asked they had them today. So I added one on with my #9 combo meal. Figuring if it was like the other Loco Taco, one was enough added with the rest of my meal, they can be a bit much in large quantities.

Overall, I definitely think the Cool Ranch profile was there much like the Nacho Cheese, although it looks pretty similar to the standard crispy taco shell, but you can see some of the Ranch colored seasoning. I felt the flavor was a little more subtle then the Nacho Cheese version, but overall good. I think I'd actually like the flavor to be a little more front and center. If you like Cool Ranch doritos and/or you liked the other version, give this a try, you'll dig this one too!

Overall, I think it rates out pretty similar to the original Loco version, I give it a 3 rating.
I finally made an excuse to get me and the family out to dinner. I took the kids early to get started on the 1/2 price apps and washed it down with BOGO happy hour drafts. This place hangs their hat on their Pit beef and pork sandwiches.

I picked two apps, one I thought would appease my young kids and the other for me. So I chose the Hot Salty Pretzels and the Buffalo Chicken Wings. The hot salty pretzels were a little bland for me, not my thing, I would pass on these in the future. They cam with a couple of interesting dipping sauces, but still didn't hit home.

On the other hand, the wings had good texture and flavor on full sized un-trimmed wings, just the way I like them. Plus they came with two different dipping options, one a savory sauce and the other Bleu Cheese. I would definitely order these again.

The kids entrees were well received for by the kids, I think they both got Mini Corn Dogs. My wife got a Cuban smoked pork, she did not love it, but I ate her other half for lunch the next day and I thought it was solid.

I instantly gravitated to the Thai Dragon, which is a Pit Pork sandwich with chili sauce, peanut sauce, Red Onions and bacon. The sandwich had great flavor and a spice level higher then expected, but I am in to that kind of thing. I liked the state fair style fries as well. Once I make my way through a few other items that I want to try on future visits, the Thai Dragon will be in the rotation.
My family have dined here and gotten taken out too many times to count. Good affordable that always comes out fast and piping hot.

One of my favorites are their Molcajetes! Molcajetes are served in a traditional stone grinding bowl made from a lava stone. The food comes out in a flaming hot bowl that adds great flavor to your food and keeps your meal hot to enjoy throughout your meal.

They have several different flavors and options with different combinations of steak, seafood, chicken, pork and chorizo. Pick one that sounds good to you, fill your warm tortillas and make your own taco/fajitas.

Last tip, don't fill up on the free chips and salsa before your dinner comes!
We spent our last night in Clontarf Castle Hotel, there was a graduation at the castle and waits to eat there were way longer then what we could tolerate. So we asked concierge for a recommendation, and helped us make some reservations at Hemmingways which was a 5 minute walk from the castle.

We got there pretty early by Dublin standards as we were road weary and hungry, plus wanted to get a good night's rest before travels back to the USA.

I sampled the wings, very unique flavor, but also very tasty, I could have used a little more of the sweet chili sauce that came on the side, but they hit the spot.
A twist on your traditional caprese salad was enjoyed by the ladies. Was called Capri Salad, grilled tomato & mozzarella slices topped with seasoned olive oil and basil peso jus.
I had this spicy shrimp dish (Pil Pil Prawns) that was extremely flavorful (chili, win & garlic sauce) to the point I tried to sop up as much of the sauce with my toasted bread as I could. Pictured below a similar shrimp dish that my wife enjoyed with a more traditional garlic/cream type sauce.
As part of the last day's activities we toured the Guinness Storehouse. All in all it is a pretty cool tour and very informational, being a packaging engineer, the info about early barrel making was the most intriguing.
Don't be lured into using your free pint coupon any of the other tasting bars on the way the top, not worth it unless you are afraid of heights!
But the free pint and the views you can get at the top of the Gravity Bar are worth the tour. The Gravity Bar is a 360 degree fully round bar lined with glass windows that gives amazing views of Dublin and the surrounding areas, plus you can sample the finest and freshest pint of Guinness you'll ever taste!

New Gingerbread Cookie Shake from BK - Worth the Hype!

Wow, the first few sips are beyond delicious and too be honest it was delicious all the way through, but I am not sure how anybody could actually drink something larger then the small. The sweetness almost overpowered me by the time I was done.

As a guy that loves the seasonal shakes, early returns have this rated higher then the Shamrock or Egg Nog shakes from McDonalds! To be fair, I really do like Ginger Snap cookies, so if you are not a fan, you probably would not be a fan of this shake! If you are, make a bee line to the nearest BK drive thru!
If you make this same journey, it makes a great stopping point, it is a nice little town with a very nice visitor center, a fair amount of shops and places to eat.

We actually thought is was a nice looking town that we wish we had more time to explore, maybe next time.

On a recommendation from the visitor area, we made a short walk to Delish Cafe for lunch. I believe we all had sandwiches for lunch. I had a warm toasted Panini style sandwich, filled with Italian style salami and meats, with some peppers and cheese. It was quite good and the pasta salad was just right to go with it.

They had some great looking baked goods that we could not find room for in our stomachs. All in all, a solid place to stop for lunch, dessert or a coffee.
You can read Imo's story here, but their signatures include Provel cheese, thin crust, and square slices, and lastly fresh, never frozen ingredients piled edge to edge, with
their homemade sauce.
We got two lunch size pizzas to share, we opted for the Deluxe and a Buffalo Chicken pizza, plus the lunch specials came with some nice fresh starter salads and a fountain drink. They were both quite good, topping to crust ratio was spot on, we both left full and satisfied, pretty good bang for your buck as well!
If you like thin crust pizza and find yourself in Missouri, check out Imo's!
Based on what I read, An Canteen fit the bill for type of food and a little easier on our budget.
The actual restaurant is pretty small, so either go early or make a reservation!
We started off with a couple micro-brews, the only brews you can get here, very good bears, nice change of pace. As usual I cannot remember, what my vegetarian sister-in-law had for dinner, but it was seafood and she liked it. My wife raved about here starter salad and I had a great Seafood chowder, best of the trip and I had it like 5 different times.
For most Twin's home games they have a rotation of food trucks in their parking lot. It is a pretty small place and their menu is limited to what is brought in that day by the fishermen. So if it is a stormy day and the boats don't go out, they don't open their doors for dining. The menu has not meat on it, it is written on black boards daily.

They had a smoked mackerel pate that came with the complimentary bread that was really delightful. We skipped any appetizers for this meal as we had a late snack at another pub earlier. The other three in my group all got a Potato Crusted Pollack dinner, they all seemed to really enjoy it. One interesting thing, is that most of our plates came with different sides, even people that ordered the same entree.

I had a grilled tuna that was cooked perfectly. All our dishes came with a multitude of small and well prepared side dishes, a little something for everybody. We also has some desserts, they were out of what we wanted and what we ended up with was just okay, but you come here for the seafood! It was a little pricey, but portions were large and in the end, only a few Euros more then some of our other dinners elsewhere.
Awhile back, I needed some quick food for me and the my young girls. We bopped through the local Wendy's drive through. Kids got their usual chicken nuggets/strips/fingers etc they always get at fast food places.

What the Menu Showed...

The "W" burger caught my eye, so I decided to give it a try. Clearly a direct competitor to McDonald's Big Mac. In my eyes, pretty ordinary, not as good as a Big Mac and not as appetizing to look at as the picture on the menu.
Overall the food was pretty good, my favorite part was a smoked mackerel pate that they brought out to our table as a starter. I believe our group has one fish entree, two chicken and I got the Chargrilled Kerry striploin of (Beef) Steak. Others very much liked their chicken, my steak was just okay, flavor was okay, but definitely overcooked as I requested Medium Rare and got Medium Well, I am kind of picky when it comes to over cooking steaks. There was no pink left in this steak :(

They had a nice variety of food on their menu and some multi-course early bird options. As a bonus they had Coors Light on tap, I very much enjoyed the Irish beers on my trip, but it was nice to have US "Domestic" lager with this meal.

My meal consisted of a very nice seafood chowder and the Half Lobster. The chowder was very delicious, probably my favorite of the trip, nice large pieces of clam and seafood. The side salad was well done and the lobster was prepared perfectly. A very filling meal that did not weigh me down.
I don't recall what everyone else ate, but all were pleased with their meals and feeling good enough to take in the Kinsale Ghost Walk, which was comedic and entertaining, while allowing us to walk off our meals and then go out for drinks and music afterwards.
My sister-in-law picked Max's Wine bar for our first dinner in Kinsale. Know for its fusion of French and Irish cuisine. The place was definitely a little more expensive then most places we ate on this trip, but their early bird twp & three course specials made it a little easier.

Oyster Sampler

Definitely plenty of items on the menu that were different from our normal fare. Between us, we had one fish entree, two Pork Belly entrees and I had a pheasant dish. We also started with some oysters and some seafood bisque. The bisque and oyster were quite good.

Pork Belly

As you may imagined, most of the food was very buttery, that is kind of what you expect with French cooking. The pork belly was quite flavorful, a little rich for most and I tried a bite, did not quite care for the maple glaze, not my thing.

Pheasant

My pheasant was pretty good, but not outstanding. We split some desserts that were very good as well. I think we all agreed that it probably wasn't that the food was not good as much as our group is not real big on French style cuisine.

Based on my taste, I will give it 2.5, but I am guessing if you love French cuisine, you would enjoy Max's just fine.
Don't have pictures, but they had very good sandwiches, quiche and a few other items we split.

After a bit more walking around for sites and shopping we settled in at Bollards based on our B&B owner's recommendation. We ate a bit early and the place was nearly empty. I am one to try many different things, so I tried their Traditional Lamb Stew, I found it quite good, would be awesome to warm a person up in the winter.
One of my travel companions had fish & chips, fairly ordinary, we felt like the fish was very good, but breading was ordinary. We had a pretty good cheese plate, but our chocolate cake dessert was awful and dry. I think a 2.5 rating was fair for the meal we had.
Hungry after a long day of checking out New Grange, I opted for the Guinness Irish Lamb & Root Vegetable stew, served with mash potatoes & fresh parsley. Two others got Bangers & Mash, and our vegetarian got the the Fish & Chips. I found the stew to be very hardy, flavorful and it hit the spot. I tried a bite of my wife's Bangers, they seemed quite good, they both raved about them, I thought they were just good. I also tried the fish & chips, I thought this place had the best chips of our trip, but the fish was just okay. The music kept the energy and fun levels high all through dinner, making us all have an extra pint after we were done with our food.
Overall, the food is a solid 3, but with the music and atmosphere, I definitely would put it on your list of places to dine or grab a pint in Dublin. I'd go here again!
I did some research and we actually had plans of eating at The Celt Pub, but they only had like 5 or 6 tables and they were all full, so Oshea's was just down the street. Oshea's is a hotel and restaurant, with a nice bar area as well. If you stay at Hotel Belvedere, this is a pretty easy 4-5 minute walk.

Three of four of our group went for fish and chips and I don't remember what my vegetarian sister in law got... Overall we all enjoyed our meal, the fish was firm and flavorful and the breading was to all of our liking. It was also a very filling portion of fish.

Also, the slaw was tasty and they did a fine job with the chips. I am pretty sure we shared a chocolate dessert here that was tasty, but I forgot to get a picture and I have forgotten the details. Plenty of beer tap options and they had some live music in the bar area as we finished up our meals. One of our travel partners, Jacon, swears this was the best Guinness he had on his whole trip of Ireland. We almost dined here a second time, but there was no seating available and we were starving. Overall, this was a solid meal, would recommend for some good pub food!
We had all day at the Detroit airport before catching a flight to JFK
and then on to Dublin. So I cruised the terminal for some lunch
options. I finally had the time to go see if I could get Sushi to go
from SORA Japanese & Sushi. I had breezed by it many times on short connections before.
Turns out, you can order Sushi to go from there and I am pretty sure it was ready in less then 10 minutes. So unless you are streaking to get to your gate, you probably have time for Sushi at DTW! Prices were pretty fare, especially for an airport and the Tuna rolls that I got were quite good.
Funny enough the first stop on this blogging adventure is breakfast at the Westin connected to the Detroit airport. Thanks to a medical diversion on our Delta flight to JFK, we got to have a late night room service (epic fail) and breakfast at the DEMA Lounge at the Westin.
Three of us has a very tasty turkey, avocado, scrambled eggs and cheese burrito stuffed into a wrap. I thought it was quite good, not sure what the wrap was, but it was not a standard flour or corn tortilla. The turkey and avocado made it a little lighter and less greasy they your average breakfast burrito offering, although it was quite large and substantial, hold you over for quite some time.

Served with some salsa and tasty hash browns, I'd have a hard time not getting it again if I get stuck at DTW Westin for breakfast again! Check back soon for a nice Sushi find at DTW!
A few weeks later, a couple engineers from the office ventured over to Rye off of Hennepin in Uptown Minneapolis.

First thing that caught our attention was the cost of sandwiches, most everything was $11-14 for a sandwich that came with a couple pickle slices and small cole slaw on the side. Everything looked and sounded pretty good, but one engineer opted to just watch rather then eat based on price.

I got their Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich (Pastrami). The sandwich came out on the plate, not overly substantial in size, nor did it have much for curb appeal on the plate, pretty simple and drab looking for the price. The quality of the meat was very high and very tasty, but the rest of the sandwich did not knock me off my feet. The pickles were obviously homemade and pretty tasty, but the cole slaw was very oily, not my cup of tea. Overall, pretty good sandwich, I give it a three, maybe higher (3.5) if it didn't cost so much or I got a bigger portion.
One co-worker got a sandwich called the Jubano, looked much tastier and fancier then what I got, little more bang for the buck. I did not try it, but he said it was great. Some day in the future, I'll likely get the Jubano on someone else's dime ;)

I have had their Tortellini Alfredo with added sausage now on two occasions and enjoyed it very much. The sausage adds a nice spice and flavor to the dish, while the Alfredo is not overly creamy and the cheese in the tortellini was very tasty. I give the dish a very respectful rating of three.
The picture is actually a half serving that was on the special one night, made for a perfect portion before heading out to a movie afterwards.

Other notes, kids spaghetti was very good. My wife has enjoyed several other pasta dishes, but I'd strongly recommend against the Beef Panini (dry and not flavorful). They have a nice looking bar as well.
Overall, very busy and many of our breakfasts and lunches were catered in as part of the conference and for the most part were pretty standard but good, they always have awesome fresh fruit!

My one evening out with a co-worker, we hit up the Flying Fish Cafe, part of the Disney Boardwalk, not too far from Epcot. It was fairly busy, but were were able to get a nice pair of seats at a bar that looked into the kitchen, made for an entertaining dining experience.

We got things started with a Yellowfin Tuna Tartare and crispy Tempura Tuna-Vegetable Sushi Roll appetizer. This thing was super delicious, only complaints that is was only 3 pieces and hard for two to split equally and wish we would have got two!

For dinner, I ordered the Signature Flying Fish Café “Potato-wrapped Red Snapper. It was quite flavorful and cooked perfectly. Really no complaints other then after seeing the filet sized Char Crusted Tuna that my buddy ordered, I really wish I had ordered that. He said it was awesome.
